“I took this class as a beginner learning a type of painting I had never taken and was hoping it would open a freedom from the brush. As an artist, we sometimes get too comfortable with what we know and need something new to grow more. If I had a preconceived notion of painting one thing, I don’t think I could have created what I did in your class, as I would have been focused on what I wanted to do. Yet someone who experiences this type of painting would be motivated to an advanced level.  I found this class to be a new method of painting for me and freed me of a tight defined brush.”

Description

Beginner Info: Cold wax is a non-heated and creamy beeswax substance. When oil and cold wax are combined, it creates a great translucent effect that allows light to pass through the previous layers. Whether you are familiar with oils or not, the addition of cold wax into oils brings a whole new experience of using simple and diverse tools for an expressive way of painting. With chopsticks, spreaders, window squeegees, and other mark-making tools, you will give your painting a sense of history through its unique textures. And it’s a lot of fun! You will feel a sense of discovery and will be surprised by how this technique impacts your paintings. During this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Layer oil paints and cold wax
  • Create translucent effects
  • Mix colors on a limited palette
  • Experiment with a variety of mark-making tools
  • Choose your own subject matter, from landscapes to abstraction
  • Paint on painted backgrounds
  • Work with different substrates of paper and board
  • Explore your creativity with texture and mark making

Advanced Info: This medium works quite well for those artists who take a process-driven approach to their art.
