New Oil and Cold Wax Class at FiftyNorth a Success

Last month, I introduced the exciting oil and cold wax technique at FiftyNorth in Northfield, MN. Their level of interest surprised me as the wait-list grew ever longer. With a packed classroom, eight people learned how to add whole new dimensions to their paintings. Oil and cold wax is a type of mixed media, made from a creamy beeswax substance, that is designed to bring texture and dimension to an otherwise two-dimensional surface.

Students put down their brushes and replaced them with new “mark-making” tools to easily create unique textures in their cold wax medium. Tools included spreaders, brayers (one of my favorites), and various metal items lying around my house and studio. Perhaps most importantly, I helped students learn to take cues from their paintings. A perceptive artist can discern the path forward just by observing and following the message inherent in her art.

The sizable interest in this class overwhelmed me. To satisfy the demand, I am teaching another class at FiftyNorth on May 14, 2024. For those interested in a deeper dive into the cold wax technique, please sign up for the two-day workshop on April 19-20, 2024 at Tolle Fine Art in downtown Northfield. There are still a few spots remaining.
